Hello Belmont neighbors,

My feature film Mantra is coming to a theater near you! Next stop,
Hollywood? Amoeba Films is unveiling its award-winning feature film
Mantra at Charlottesville's Vinegar Hill theater for a pre-release
limited engagement in September and October. Here are the screening
dates/times:

• Saturday, Sep. 26 noon
• Wednesday, Sep. 30 9pm
• Saturday, Oct. 31 midnight

Mantra just won Best Feature Film at the Fright Night Film Festival.
It is a Buddhist horror film. Six strangers on a spiritual retreat
find themselves hunted by their lives’ transgressions. No one saves
them. It is a graphic, unflinching meditation on desire, delusion,
death and the origins of suffering – resolving in rebirth and
redemption – perhaps a first for a horror flick.
Mantra is loosely based on my experiences practicing “bardo” death-
state mediations with Buddhist monks in Dharamsala, India (mixed with
a small dose of Peruvian Ayahuaska). It is intended for both horror
fans and the spiritual cinema. The marketing pitch is: ten minutes of
nudity, twenty pints of blood, Four Noble Truths.

It’s scored with heaps of local music from Thrum, Straight Punch to
the Crotch, the Love Tentacle Drip Society and Jim Gagnon’s
Dreamtime Project, with trip-hop sound engineering by Abel Okugawa
Wright and Kris Bowmaster.

As far as filmwatching goes, Amoeba Films is your “buy local”
brand. Mantra was shot (on grueling schedules with a lot of blood,
sweat and Bodo’s) with local talent at familiar spots, supported by
places like Mona Lisa Pasta and the Starlight Express (with a bus
cameo).

Put it on your calendar! Pass it on! Tell all your friends and
coworkers! Put it on your Facebook! Twitter it! Talk it up!

Tickets are $10. (Officially this is s a pre-release "fund raiser"
since distributors don't want you to have previous public screenings.)

See you at the movies!

Production note: Amoeba Films, rolling with momentum, is now in
preproduction for several films to be shot in the area including a
four-part film-within-a-film-within-a-film project The Method
Anthology, and the rock doc Dad Band. Proceeds from ticket sales will
help fund these endeavors. Charlottesville may not be Hollywood.
(Heck, it’s not even Austin.) But we can make movies worth the $10
ticket price.
