BCNA Meeting Notes
Monday, January 12, 2009
7:00-8:00 pm
*RWSA meeting January 27*—The Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority will host a
meeting with the combined neighborhood associations of BCNA and Woolen
Mills. The site will be either the meeting room at RWSA or the Woolen Mills
Chapel.
*Neighbors' concern: Belmont Park bus stop*—Jeff Snyder and others have
continually raised concerns about the speed of traffic around Belmont Park.
Of particular interest is the bus route which nearly circles the park. Due
to the terrain, buses generally build up speed, which is a threat to the
safety of pedestrians, particularly children and those with strollers. A
petition for traffic calming on Druid and/or Rialto is being revived, and
Jeff will be contacting CTS about a change is the bus route which would
involve moving the bus stop to the northwest end of Belmont Park.
*Renovation of the bus storage area on Avon Street*—Renovation of the bus
storage area on Avon Street will bring the facility to environmental LEED
certification, but is not expected to result in increased bus or truck
traffic.
*City construction report*—The Internet address for updates on the City's
construction projects:
www.charlottesville.org/Index.aspx?page=35
*Community garden*—Jesse is developing the project. He has met with Lisa
Tarranto, who manages the Tricycle Community Gardens in Richmond. Belmont
garden sites under consideration include the Sojourners' property and the
8-lot undeveloped parcel which is bounded by Monticello Avenue and Carlton
Road. We are still looking for gardeners and architects to help plan how the
space should feel and look.
*Federal economic stimulus request*—The City has requested $14 million for
inclusion in the Federal economic stimulus plan (infrastructures) being
considered in Washington. Another $1 million is included for developing
walking trails around the city.
*VDOT permits Rivanna trail extension on its right-of-way*—Pending an
agreement with one private landowner, VDOT's permission to build a trail
extension between Rives and Quarry on its right of way will create an
important link in the trail this year.
