Dear Colette,
Charlottesville Tomorrow is currently accepting applications for the
position of *Semester Intern* for the Fall of 2009. As the application
deadline approaches, we need your help recruiting candidates.
The Semester Intern will help our non-partisan organization cover critical
elections in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. The internship is an
excellent way to become familiar with planning issues in both communities.
Duties will include attending meetings and candidate forums in order to
bring the public in-depth information on key decisions related to land use,
transportation and community design. The successful candidate will assist
Charlottesville Tomorrow’s two full-time staff in the production of concise
narratives, audio podcasts of meetings, as well as online video of
election-related events.
Previous interns have said the position has provided an excellent education
outside of the classroom.
“Being able to observe and engage with the Charlottesville-Albemarle
community’s land use and transportation discussions has been an ideal
supplement to the planning theory and methods I’m acquiring from classes.”
Through the course of attending planning commission meetings and other
public meetings, I have gradually been able to pick up some of the nuances
and political undercurrents of the decision-making process.” Daniel Nairn,
Semester Intern 2008-09
“Spending time going to public meetings has given me insight into how local
government works and how important it is to understand the historic context
behind decisions that will affect our community in the future….Additionally,
I learned about online journalism and podcast production, as well as useful
writing techniques.” Fania Gordon, University of Virginia Public Service
Fellow 2008-09
